The Lowdown on Log Analysis - Reprinted from The Triangle Technical Journal
November 29, 2005

So you’ve invested in a corporate web site, now what? Well, many companies treat their web sites like the OSHA posters that they are required to display…everyone has one so there’s ours. But that is a bad move. Web sites at the corporate level can be significant investments and should be treated as such. To get in the right mindset, organizations should think of their web sites in the same manner as physical expansions – web sites are essentially virtual expansions. And therefore, their performance should be evaluated to determine effectiveness, impact, and return on investment. “How?”…You ask. “Server Log Analysis.”…I reply. Analog
August 5, 1999

Analog is a free program used to analyze the log files from Web servers. It tells you which pages are most popular, which countries people are visiting from, which sites they tried to follow broken links from, etc. Link: http://www.clickz.com/resources/adres/website_analytics/print.php/176641

Analog: The most popular logfile analyser in the world
Survey 1998

There isn't much data on which is the most widely-used logfile analyser. Computing magazines' surveys usually only ask about commercial packages. The only survey which has ever asked about all the main packages by name is GVU's user survey, which consistently ranked analog number one. In the most recent survey, they interviewed 434 webmasters in October & November 1998 and found that 24.9% used analog. The next most popular program was used by 20.3% of webmasters. Counting only webmasters who used any logfile analyser, analog's figure rises to over 29%. Link: http://www.analog.cx/survey.html
