The emperor has no clothes, just a box of cookies
April 5, 2005

A few weeks back, Jupiter Research released a study that found, shockingly, that users are deleting cookies at such high levels that web measurement is in danger of being a pointless exercise. The report, "Measuring Unique Visitors: Addressing the Dramatic Decline in Accuracy of Cookie-Based Measurement" by Eric Peterson, was met with howls of derision and disbelief. Now, Peterson writes on his blog, Nielsen/NetRatings has corraborating research. Link: http://www.siliconvalleywatcher.com/mt/archives/2005/04/the_emperor_has_1.php

Nielsen nonsense?
March 21, 2005

More foolishness from the fantasy world of teevee measurement. Yeah, maybe the Internet isn't as easily measurable as it once was, as folks purge their cookies (Jupiter analysis here, or here for you freeloaders; Eric goes on and on). But at least the industry doesn't extrapolate from an N of 100 college students. Lnk: http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/card/archives/007061.html

They measured click through rate and found that sites with smaller audiences sometimes have higher CTRs that big-name search engines; Tiscali (an ISP that uses Overture) was 4th in terms of CTRs (beating MSN, Lycos, AOL and Ask amongst other) but 12th in terms of the number of unique searches at the site.
